I want to share an experience from last week that reminded me just how closely God walks with us in even the smallest (and sometimes most nerve-wracking) parts of our lives. Fall gets pretty busy on the farm, and last week was a whirlwind of activity: butcher deliveries & pick ups, winter prep, and family activities. In the midst of it all, we had a specific, nerve-testing task looming—loading our less docile steers, including one wilder red steer that had never stepped foot in a barn before, much less a trailer. If you’ve ever loaded cattle, you know that things can get dangerous quickly, and I was carrying a quiet worry all week about how it would all go.
The night before, as I was driving my daughters home from a band concert, I asked them to pray for a safe load, to keep everyone—dad, cows, and all—safe and calm. The next morning at dawn Benjamin and I got to work. We started loading, and the first steer, though stubborn, finally walked in. Then the real test: the red steer.
To my surprise, he calmly separated himself from the herd all by himself, walked into the loading chute, and started sniffing the trailer entrance. Benjamin and I just looked at each other, dumbfounded by the gentleness of it all. With a bit of patience and guidance, the steer stepped up into the trailer as if he’d done it a hundred times. No rodeo, no chaos—just a miracle of smoothness and peace. God had answered our prayers in such an unexpected, tangible way.
Later at breakfast, I asked Marion if she had prayed that morning. She smiled and said, “Right when you asked me last night, I prayed. And I prayed again when I heard you go out this morning.” Her faith and those simple, heartfelt prayers were answered & what could have been a difficult, even dangerous, task ended up being a smooth and safe morning.
This little moment of grace reminded me that God answers our prayers all the time, sometimes in ways that fill us with awe. Whether it’s in a gentle red steer or an everyday moment we take for granted, His love and protection are there. Miracles are in motion around us every day! So, whatever season you find yourself in, I encourage you to take a pause, ask for His help, and trust that He’s walking alongside you.
Let’s keep leaning on Him as we work through our days. As we move toward winter, may His peace guide and protect us all.
With gratitude,
Leah and the Great Heritage Farm Family
