For the first time in nearly six years, we’re temporarily without fresh milk on the farm. All three of our dairy cows are officially dry and enjoying a well-earned rest before calving at the end of June. Dependable systems need a season of rest, and I’m honoring that.
Benj & I did briefly explore purchasing another cow in milk, but current prices gave us pause—a disease-tested A2 Brown Swiss in milk is going for $4,500–$6,500 right now and simply not in the budget. For us, it made more sense to stay the course, give our girls the break they need, and set ourselves up for a strong next season.
And here’s the irony: after years of work, our farm store is finally ready—fridge moved in, power on—and right on cue, the cows are dry. The store looks beautiful, and it will be ready and waiting the moment fresh milk is flowing again. I am so excited to share it with you.
To everyone who is patiently waiting—thank you. Your understanding truly means a lot to us.
In the meantime, if you need fresh milk, I’d recommend Port-Haven Dairy in Sleepy Eye, MN. They also raise A2 Brown Swiss cows, and Tom and Mary are a wonderful family doing excellent work in regenerative farming. You can reach them at 507-227-8056.
I’ll miss seeing so many of you each week! If you’d like to stop by and say hello, don’t hesitate to reach out. And good news—our chickens are finally laying again, so we do have farm-fresh eggs available at $5/dozen if you need an excuse to swing out to the farm.
I can’t wait to welcome you back to the farm store with a full fridge—good things ahead!
Warmly,
Leah Matzke
