How are you this fine August day? I am so happy to be here with you!
If you visit the farm right now, look closely. Our pastures are literally filled with butterflies. Monarchs. Painted ladies. Swallowtails. Sulphurs & skippers. Thousands of them dancing through the clover and alfalfa.
Beautiful things happen when we create the conditions for life to flourish.
Five years ago, our pastures were a mono-cropped field. Today, they are filled with earth worms, grasses, legumes, insects, birds and LIFE. The transformation didn’t happen overnight. We planted, nurtured, waited, grazed cattle, prayed, and kept going.
And eventually, life returned to the soil. Did you know the soil isn’t just dirt?
It’s alive.
Once I made that paradigm shift, the way I see things changed.
There is an entire world beneath our feet working together to grow the plants we eat and the grasses our cattle eat. And it is incredible. The more I learn, the more I realize my job isn’t to force the land to do what I want.
Look at creation. Does it want bare earth, or does it cover itself with green growth? Does it want to be tilled up, or does it build layers of life? Does it simplify, or does it encourage diversity in plants, insects, birds and animals?
A part of regenerative farming, to me, is learning to work with that design instead of against it. To nurture life rather than constantly trying to control it.
And I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about supporting a small farm.
You get to be part of the growing.
So if you come visit us this summer, take a few minutes to stop and watch the butterflies.
They’re a little reminder that beautiful things are happening all around us, even when we can’t see them yet.
And I’m so glad you’re here to see it with us.
Love Leah
