What will tomorrow bring?
I hear this concern echoed in conversation more and more from visitors, friends, and even my own children, who share their concerns about the state of the world today. With so much uncertainty, it’s easy to wonder how any of us can make a meaningful impact in the midst of it all.
But in times like these, I’m reminded of a legend about Martin Luther from 500 years ago. When asked what he would do if the world were to go into chaos tomorrow, his answer was profoundly simple: “I would plant an apple tree today.”
Luther’s answer invites us to reflect on how we live in the present. No matter what storms may gather on the horizon, there is an immense impact in sowing seeds of hope, in creating something good today, and trusting that God will provide the growth.
It is so easy to focus on the bad news and see all that is wrong in this fallen world. But like Luther’s apple tree, our daily acts of kindness, love, and service — even the smallest ones — plant seeds that will grow long after we’ve passed through this season. What are you planting today? How are you choosing to nurture the soil of your life, your family, your community?
At our farm, I see every day as an opportunity to plant hope. We raise our animals on this land with care, knowing that the work we do today blesses others tomorrow. Whether it’s the creamy milk from our cows, or the regeneratively raised beef & pork we offer, each item reflects our commitment to nourishing both body and soul.
And speaking of growth and giving, my parents’ apple tree is a beautiful reminder of this truth. It stands strong and fruitful, unsprayed and full of the most perfect, juicy red apples year after year. As a way to celebrate this season of abundance, I want to share this blessing with you that has blessed my family for so many seasons. As long as the apples last with every farm visit I’m happy to be including a bag of these beautiful apples as our gift to you. Just ask about them when you schedule your next pick up so I can mark a bag for you.
As you enjoy the fruits of our labor, may you be reminded of the seeds of hope you are planting in your own life and the lives of those around you. Let us move forward with faith, trusting in God’s perfect timing for all things.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” ~ Jeremiah 17:7-8
“The Apples of My Eye” – My dad and our 5 kids showing off the fully picked apple tree. This tree has blessed our family with delicious apples for over 25 years, and along with it the memories of making apple sauce, pies, tarts, and more. Its fruit has been in church pie auctions, grade school & college cider making events, family reunions, and all the way up to the MN boundary waters for October canoe trips. Let’s add your kitchen to the list 🙂
