How do we mark the occasion around here? Two ways: the cows walk out onto fresh pasture for the first time all season, and Benj gets his annual haircut.
Yes, annual. As in, once a year. As in, he grows it out all winter long and then — right around the time the grass is green enough to graze — he decides it is time and gives the kids the clippers. This year had a little extra drama: the clipper guard slipped off mid-buzz, and ziiiiip, straight to the scalp he went. The funny thing is the kids actually did a really nice job, and the mishap was done by his own hand when we went to check it. I think he looks great, but he always looks great to me.
Watching the cows step onto that first green pasture never gets old. They always run and leap about and look utterly ridiculous — that reminds me exactly why we do this. And I’m so glad you get to be part of it, even from wherever you are.
Now, for the ladies on this list — I have something special coming your way this summer, and I really hope you’ll come.
The wonderful women of Minnesota Women in Conservation are hosting an evening pasture tour right here at Great Heritage Farm, and it is going to be so fun!
Friday, July 24th · 5–8pm
Great Heritage Farm
57098 310th St.
Winthrop, MN 55396
You’ll walk the farm, meet the animals, and get a real look at how a multi-species operation works as a living system — where the dairy cows feed the pigs, the beef cattle wake up the soil, and the chickens handle cleanup duty on the cow patties (glamorous work, truly). We’ll wrap it up with a learning circle and pizza.Whether you’re farming curious or looking for connection with other women who love the land — this evening is for you. Come hang out, leave with new friends and maybe a few new ideas.
RSVP here — it’s free!
More soon — and as always, thank you for following along on this wild, wonderful life.
With a big smile, Leah (& the newly shorn Benj)
